Project Explor@: Using digital technologies to foster youth talents

Start: End: Status: ONGOING

In Costa Rica, the Omar Dengo Foundation (ODF), Wal-Mart, the Ministry of Public Education (MPE), Ministry of Justice and Microsoft have joined their efforts to offer children and youth at social risk a set of non-formal learning experiences aimed at developing their creativity, productivity and healthy recreation. The Explor@ Project is a pedagogical proposal based on an innovative approach for the use of digital technologies to foster youth’s talents, their self and collective efficacy, and their return to the educational system. Spanning over a four year period, the project will benefit approximately 20,000 children and youth.

Explor@ provides opportunities for children and youth’s integral education as it creates secure learning spaces that take advantage of existing technological resources in the country. A package of six workshops has been created:

1) Design of electronic games;
2) Edition of digital newspapers;
3) Web design;
4) Prevention of disasters;
5) Data processing packages, e-mail and other resources; and
6) Hardware and software.

The project coordinates the execution of these workshops with an extensive group of nonprofit organizations, local governments, educational centers and public institutions in the country. Explor@ provides training for the facilitators and didactic materials.
